Just when we thought the games were over, Netflix brings back the chaos. Squid Game Season 2 picks up the tension where it left off, with deadlier twists, haunting symbolism, and a new chapter of brutal survival.
“Squid Game” is a South Korean series whose season 2 was released on Netflix on December 26, 2024. Season 1 was released on September 17, 2021, and Season 3 is set to be released on June 27, 2025. This thrilling survival series is both written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk. After the massive success of season 1, season 2 also gained popularity with the introduction of new players in the series.
Plot Summary
After three years of winning the game, Song Gi-hun gives up on going abroad and decides to stop that deadly game. Hwang Jun-ho, who survived after being shot by his brother, keeps looking for the mysterious island of the game location. Later, he teams up with Gi-hun, and they plan to meet the front man. Gi-hun re-enters the horrific game, where he encounters his old friend and other players who are participating for money, unaware of the game's deadly nature. Surprisingly, the Front Man also takes part in the game as Player 001 and grows closer to Gi-hun, who mistakenly thinks of him as a friend. Soon after the first game, “Red Light Green Light” starts, where Gi-hun helps other players understand the horrific elimination after losing the game. He tries to persuade them to stop the game and go back to their normal life, but players blinded by the prize money disregard him and continue to play the game.
My thoughts
As a writer and director, Hwang Dong-hyuk maintained the engaging plot of the series. Along with the previous cast, the newly introduced players surely added a new charm to the story. The entire cast delivered an impressive performance, effectively bringing the memorable characters to life. The theme of the game location remained consistent, continuing from the previous season, while the new games introduced in this season expanded the overall setup to a grand scale. In contrast to season 1, season 2 does not have a proper conclusion, and the story will continue into season 3. Personally, I find incomplete stories frustrating - perhaps I just lack patience. Now, we have to wait for season 3 to answer our lingering questions. Apart from this, all the episodes are entertaining, and the new cast members pull you into their enchanting stories and interactions.
Although Season 2 of Squid Game isn't as good as the first season, the introduction of new players and games helped make it enjoyable. I really liked the drama and am eagerly waiting for the next season. If you enjoyed watching Season 1 of Squid Game, I would recommend you check out Season 2 as well.
