Instead of focusing solely on intense surgeries and hospital politics, it beautifully captures the everyday lives of five doctors who have been friends since medical school. Through quiet moments, heartfelt conversations, and their small hospital band, the drama reminds us that life is made of simple, meaningful connections. 

“Hospital Playlist Season 1” is a South Korean television series aired on tvN from March 12, 2020, to May 28, 2020. Written by Lee Woo-jung and directed by Shin Won-ho, this medical drama is available to watch on Netflix.

Plot Summary 

A group of five doctors in their 40s, who have been friends since medical school, work at Yulje Medical Center. Lee Ik-jun is an assistant professor of general surgery who specializes in liver transplants. He is well-liked at the hospital due to his cheerful personality. After his divorce, he becomes a single father to his young son, Woo-joo. 

Ahn Jeong-won is an assistant professor of pediatric surgery, recognized for his compassionate nature. However, he secretly longs to become a priest, following in the footsteps of his older siblings. His internal struggle between his responsibilities as a doctor and his aspiration for the priesthood is further complicated when Jang Gyeo-ul, a third-year general surgery resident, confesses her unrequited feelings for him. 

Kim Jun-wan is an assistant professor of cardiothoracic surgery who later becomes the head of his department. He is known for his blunt and cold exterior, but he has a warm heart. He starts a secret relationship with Ik-jun's sister, Ik-sun, who is a soldier. They both struggle to keep their relationship hidden from others. 

Yang Seok-Hyeong, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynaecology, is an introvert who prefers solitude but is deeply empathetic towards his patients. He is divorced and has a complicated family history, but he deeply cares for his mother. A second-year resident of obstetrics and gynaecology, Chu Min-ha develops feelings for him, but before she can confess her love, Seok-Hyeong's quiet life is stirred by his ex-wife's call. 

Chae Song-hwa, associate professor of neurosurgery and the only woman in the group, is admired for her professional perfection and bright personality. Later, she decides to transfer to the Sokcho branch for one year to address her medical issues. Before leaving for Sokcho, Ik-jun confesses his long-time feelings for her and asks her to take her time to answer. 

While managing their demanding careers with personal struggles, the five of them revive their college band and relieve their stress through weekly jamming sessions.

My Thoughts 

The story revolves around a group of five doctors who have been friends since medical school, showcasing their ordinary yet unique daily lives at the hospital. The central theme of the show emphasizes the humanization of the medical profession, portraying doctors not as superhumans but as individuals who face difficult days, personal grief, and the burden of life-altering decisions. 

The entire cast delivered excellent performances, but I want to specifically commend the main leads: Jo Jung-suk, Yoo Yeon-seok, Jung Kyung-ho, Kim Dae-myung, and Jeon Mi-do for their unforgettable portrayals of their characters. The strong friendship among Ik-jun, Jeong-won, Song-hwa, Jun-wan, and Seok-hyeong is a standout aspect of the show, while the chemistry between individual couples beautifully defines the slow-burn romance. 

Each episode concludes with a band performance where the chosen song reflects the emotional message of the episode. The series has received praise for its uplifting atmosphere and realistic medical details. It skillfully combines the main themes of the slice-of-life genre with witty humor and elements of patient romance. 

Although the series lacks a central plot or a main villain, it highlights the everyday experiences of hospital life, emphasizing healthy relationships among its characters. It deviates from typical tropes found in traditional medical dramas, such as inheritance disputes and high-stakes hospital politics. 

The show has an open ending with several cliffhangers that will be resolved in the second season. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this drama and highly recommend it to fans of the slice-of-life genre.

Hospital Playlist Season 1 isn’t just a medical drama; it’s a comforting slice-of-life story about friendship, empathy, and growing older together. The warmth between the characters, the emotional patient stories, and the nostalgic music make it incredibly healing to watch. If you love dramas that feel realistic, gentle, and deeply human, this one deserves a special place on your watchlist.
