With unexpected twists, complex characters, and a haunting atmosphere, it slowly unravels a chilling story where every truth hides another lie.
“Night Has Come” is a South Korean television series aired on U+ Mobile TV from December 4, 2023, to December 21, 2023. Written by Kang Min-ji and directed by Lim Dae-woong, this horrific survival series is available to watch on Viki.
Plot Summary
On field trip day, class 2-3 students of Yooil High School reached the retreat center and got trapped in there. In the night, they received the message regarding the mafia game.
Unaware of the consequences, all the students participate in a game that asks them to vote through their phones, and soon after, they witness the death of the student who received the majority of votes. Students who tried to escape by crossing the boundary of the game area quickly met their deaths.
The game will only end when either the citizens find and kill all the mafias or the mafias kill all the citizens. Every night, each of them gets a chance to cast a vote for the person who seems to be mafia, and the one who receives the majority of votes is killed.
When night comes, all citizens fall asleep, while mafias have to choose one person and kill them. Among the students, there is a doctor who can save one person each night, and a police officer who can check the identity of one person each night.
Lee Yoon-seo, a childhood friend of class president Kim Jun-hee, sees a ghost who tries to give her some clues regarding the game. Yoon-seo takes the help of her best friend, Oh Jung-won, to follow the ghost but fails to catch it.
Kim So-mi, vice class president, despises Yoon-seo due to her close relationship with Jun-hee, whom she likes, and tries to frame her as a mafia, but Jun-hee saves Yoon-seo.
Go Kyung-jun, a delinquent student who always bullies Jin Da-beom, a weak student, with his gang, conflicts with Jun-hee and other students while trying to make things go his way. As the game moves forward, students witness their classmates dying in front of their eyes with shocking identity revelations.
My Thoughts
The story of the show is based on a famous mafia game, but instead of simply eliminating players, they are actually killed. The game takes place at a retreat center, which was supposed to be an accommodation for students on their field trip day, but the place was strangely horrific and creepy, suitable for its thriller theme.
The cast of the show is full of youth who delivered excellent acting performances. The student's terror and desperation to survive in the game portrayed by Lee Jae-in, Kim Woo-seok, Choi Ye-bin, Cha Woo-min, Ahn Ji-ho, and Jung So-ri is incredibly praiseworthy.
The scene where all the students decide not to cast a vote, thinking it will stop the game, but their plan turns on them and everything becomes a bloody mess, was SO disturbing and scary.
The show skillfully combined genres like thriller, horror, revenge, and mystery with an unexpected twist at the end. It will remind you of Squid Game because here, also, elimination is equal to death. I personally find the mafia game very exciting to watch, and I binge-watched all episodes of this series because of its engaging storyline.
Also, some characters are really annoying, which will make you question humanity and morality, while some scenes are too disturbing and unpleasant to watch, which will keep you on the edge of your seat. The series presented topics like bullying and jealousy among the students, which led to violence and tragic consequences, reflecting the harsh reality of the world.
The ending of the series cannot be categorized as good or bad; it was more open-ended. Still, it was satisfying, surprising yet bittersweet, which will leave you with a lingering feeling and lasting impression.
Night Has Come is not just a thriller; it’s a psychological journey that keeps you guessing until the very end. If you love intense storytelling, complex characters, and a dark, mysterious atmosphere, this K-drama should be next on your binge list. Prepare for twists you won’t see coming.
