What happens when a Korean-Italian mafia consigliere takes on corruption in Seoul? Vincenzo is a thrilling mix of sharp wit, stylish action, and legal drama. With a touch of dark comedy and a charismatic anti-hero, this K-drama delivers justice with a twist.
“Vincenzo” is a South Korean television series aired on tvN from February 20, 2021, to May 2, 2021. Written by Park Jae-beom and directed by Kim Hee-won, this action crime series is available to watch on Netflix.
Plot Summary
Park Joo-kyung, adopted by an Italian family at a young age, loses his entire family in an unfortunate accident. He is then adopted by Don Fabio and takes on the name Vincenzo Cassano, becoming a consigliere for the mafia and an Italian lawyer of Korean origin. He returns to South Korea to retrieve the $110 million worth of gold hidden in the basement of Geumga Plaza, a commercial building in Seoul, which was illegally acquired by the Babel Group. He helped a Chinese tycoon, who is dead now, to bury this illegal gold in the building.
The tenants at Geumga Plaza have interesting personalities and include diverse business lines like a law firm, a laundromat, an Italian restaurant, a snack bar, a dance studio, and even a piano school. Vincenzo particularly clicks with Hong Yoo-chan, who runs Jipuragi Law Firm, due to their common foe Babel Group. Soon, Hong Yoo-chan is murdered at the orders of the Babel Group.
Yoon Cha-young, an attorney at Wusang Law Firm who defends Babel and the daughter of Hong Yoo-chan, resigns from Wusang and joins hands with Vincenzo to take revenge for her father's death. Jang Han-seo, who acts as the owner of Babel in front of the public, is actually a puppet of his brother, who is the real chairman of Babel. It is later revealed that Jang Jun-woo, an associate at Wusang Law Firm, is Jang Han-seok, the real chairman of the Babel Group. Wusang appoints Choi Myung-hee, a corrupt attorney, to defend Babel.
Later, Vincenzo finds a way to acquire gold without demolishing the building and also finds a USB which has a Guillotine file containing many pieces of evidence about corruption by highly respected authorities and the Babel Group. To obtain the Guillotine file, Babel attempts to eliminate Vincenzo, but using his mafia tactics, Vincenzo skillfully counterattacks.
My Thoughts
Vincenzo has a unique crime storyline with an entertaining script. The cinematography of the show is dark and cold, taking us to a ruthless world of mafia and corruption. The whole cast of the show did an excellent job in terms of acting and portraying such unforgettable characters. I would specifically like to praise lead actors Song Joong-ki, Jeon Yeon-been, and Ok Taec-yeon for playing the most charismatic characters in the Korean drama world.
I even loved the character played by Kwak Dong-yeon and his brotherly bond shared with Vincenzo. Although the major part of the drama was based on crime and action, the subtle romance between Vincenzo and Cha-young is worth watching. They are the true power couple of the series. Their every interaction was interesting, and I kept wanting more of it till the end of the drama.
Also, the antagonist Jang Han-seok was no less than Vincenzo; Taec-yeon introduced one of the most charismatic villains of the Korean series. You should never miss watching the on-screen fight between these powerful characters. The residents of Geumga Plaza added a lot of humor to the serious tone of the series, making it utterly entertaining, and their deep bond with Vincenzo portrayed strong loyalty and friendship.
Personally, I loved the character of Vincenzo played by Song Joong-ki, he looks cool while doing action scenes and stylish while delivering witty humor. The show explores moral ambiguity along with the fine line between revenge and justice. It tells us that in a corrupt world, playing by the rules doesn't always work; sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.
Overall, Vincenzo is an action crime series with dark humor and a pinch of romance. I loved watching this drama, and if you are a fan of cool action series with powerful characters, don’t miss watching this series. This drama was entertaining in all aspects, and I would highly recommend watching it.
