Behind every makeover lies a story, and True Beauty delivers it with heart, humor, and relatable pain. This K-drama isn't just a rom-com; it's a journey of finding self-worth in a world obsessed with looks.
“True Beauty” is a South Korean television series aired on tvN from December 9, 2020, to February 4, 2021. Directed by Kim Sang-hyeop and written by Lee Si-eun, this romantic comedy series gained more popularity on international platforms compared to the Korean industry. This drama comprises 16 episodes, available to watch on Netflix and Viki.
Plot Summary
Lim Joo-kyung is a high school student who has faced discrimination due to her appearance since childhood. She has been bullied by her peers because of her low self-confidence regarding her looks. After enduring this bullying for too long, she decides to drop out of school. Determined to transform herself, she learns makeup techniques from online videos and becomes stunningly beautiful. In her new school, Joo-kyung quickly gains popularity due to her attractive looks and begins hanging out with her new friends. Lee Su-ho, a popular boy at the school known for his cold personality, becomes involved with Joo-kyung because of their shared interest in books. As their friendship develops, he discovers her true identity beneath her makeup, yet he still chooses to befriend her. Another popular student, Han Seo-jun, also uncovers Joo-kyung's secret and eventually develops feelings for her. Su-Ho and Seo-jun were once best friends, but after a tragic event, they became enemies. Surprisingly, both of them end up falling for Joo-kyung. This creates a love triangle as Joo-kyung navigates her feelings while trying to keep her secret at school.
My thoughts
The show has an engaging storyline and good pace with charming characters. Although the plot is a typical love triangle with a predictable ending and an unreal transformation of the female lead through makeup, the performance given by the cast is praiseworthy. The lively and bright theme of the show complements the school atmosphere and emits youthful energy with fresh vibes. The chemistry between the lead actors was so good that it literally parted the fans into groups supporting either Su-ho or Seo-jun. For that, I would like to praise the acting of Ga-young, Eun-woo, and In-youp, who portrayed such lovable characters. Some scenes in the drama were absolutely hilarious, which don't fail to crack you up, while some scenes were emotional and heartbreaking. The series conveyed the good message that the true beauty lies inside and not in the outer appearance. We shouldn't judge a person based on looks, and be kind to everyone.
Overall, “True Beauty” is a great mixture of romance, comedy and drama packed with entertainment. If you like such lighthearted dramas with stunning cast, I highly recommend watching it.
